Dialogues was written for William Harvey, the founder of Cultures in Harmony. I stumbled upon their website and was immediately intrigued. Here was a musical organization that coordinates several programs each year, each to underprivileged countries around the world, in hopes of encouraging cultural diplomacy. One part of their mission statement is to encourage intercultural dialogue, hoping that through music, cultures can come together in ways that current boundaries have made impossible. In each program, the musicians work with children and coordinate with local musicians to accomplish this goal. They also partner with humanitarian organizations and promote democratic values.
Needless to say, this sort of organization serves a very high purpose in the current world environment and I felt the need to contribute. I contacted William Harvey and he asked me to write a piece for their trip to Qatar. The result was a set of three pieces for flute, violin and cello. I later renamed this piece Dialogues to correspond with the group’s purpose.
